Customer Review from Google

“DH Driveways have done an absolutely superb job on our large patio. The price was good, the workmanship first-class and Darren was very attentive and responsive to what we wanted the area for, coming up with solutions that met those requirements – and then exceeded them in terms of look and design. And they did it when they said they would, which is not always the case with contractors! Highly recommended.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Pattern Imprinted Concrete

Everything You Need to Know

What is pattern imprinted concrete?

Pattern imprinted concrete (PIC), also known as stamped concrete or decorative concrete, is a surfacing technique where freshly poured concrete is coloured, textured and imprinted with pattern stamps before it sets. The result mimics the appearance of block paving, cobblestones, natural stone or brick — but as a single seamless slab that is stronger, cheaper to maintain and weed-free.

How long does a PIC driveway last?

A properly installed pattern imprinted concrete driveway should last 25 to 30 years or more. The concrete slab is reinforced with steel mesh and laid on a compacted MOT sub-base, making it extremely durable. Re-sealing every 3–5 years keeps the colour vibrant and protects the surface from freeze-thaw cycles common in West Lancashire winters.

How does PIC compare to block paving?

Pattern imprinted concrete is generally more cost-effective to install and far cheaper to maintain than block paving. Because it is a single sealed slab, there are no joints for weeds to grow through and no individual blocks to sink, shift or get stolen. Block paving can look spectacular but requires regular weeding, re-sanding of joints and occasional relevelling — none of which apply to PIC.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

In most cases, no. Under Permitted Development rules, you can replace a driveway without planning permission provided it is permeable — or drainage directs runoff to a lawn or border — and covers under 5 square metres of a front garden. DH Driveways can advise on drainage requirements at your free site survey. Listed buildings or conservation areas may have additional restrictions.

How long does installation take?

A typical domestic driveway takes 2–4 days from excavation to final seal. You’ll need to keep vehicles off for approximately 48–72 hours after the final sealant is applied, though foot traffic is usually possible within 24 hours. We always provide a realistic timeline before work starts so you can plan accordingly.

What patterns and colours are available?

We offer a huge range of patterns including cobblestone, Roman cobble, ashlar slate, herringbone brick, random stone, running bond, fan pattern and more. Colours can be mixed to create virtually any shade — from warm sandstone and charcoal grey to deep burgundy and terracotta. Contrasting border colours and inset features can further personalise your design.

How do I maintain a pattern imprinted concrete driveway?

Day-to-day maintenance is very simple — a brush or garden hose is usually sufficient. We recommend a professional reseal every 3–5 years to maintain the colour and protect the surface. Avoid using de-icing salt in winter as this can damage the sealant; use a plastic shovel rather than metal if you need to clear snow.

Do you offer a guarantee on your work?

Yes. All DH Driveways installations come with a written guarantee covering structural defects in workmanship and materials. We are confident in our work and have built our reputation on the quality of our finished driveways across West Lancashire over many years. Full guarantee details are provided in your contract before work begins.

Can you work around vehicles or access constraints?

We are experienced in working in all kinds of residential situations — terraced houses with tight access, properties on busy roads, homes with elderly residents or disabilities. At your site survey we’ll identify any access challenges and plan the job accordingly. We always aim to cause the minimum disruption possible during installation.

Do you cover Merseyside, Lancashire & Greater Manchester?

Yes — all three are within our 25-mile coverage area from our base in Wigan. We regularly work across Wigan, Hindley, Pemberton, Worsley, Tyldesley, Standish, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Skelmersdale, Up Holland, Ormskirk, St Helens, Chorley, Leigh, Bolton, Warrington, Liverpool, Halewood, Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Preston, Maghull, Merseyside, Southport and all surrounding villages.
